Rottnest Island is located 19 km off the coast of Western Australia, near Fremantle. Rottnest Island is 11 kilometres long, and 4.5 kilometres in width at its widest point. The land area measures 19 kmē. It is classified as an A Class Reserve and is managed by the Rottnest Island Authority. No private ownership of land is allowed. It's GPS coordinates are 32°0'35S and 115°31'5E.
Rottnest Island,often reffered to as "Rotto" by Australian's has been one of Western Australia's premiere tourist attractions for over 50 years. It is also a favorite tourist attraction for locals wanting a coastal getaway. And who wouldn't want to go to there? Very well priced for a day trip (or longer) and you will be surrounded by beautiful crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and interesting wild life. The marine life is fantastic as well and with over 360 different species of fish and coral, it has become a favourite destination for divers and snorkelers. There is also some great fishing to be had.The island also had some recent world wide network coverage as the US television show The Amazing Race 9 featured an episode with events held on the island.
Rottnest Island is visited by nearly 500,000 visitors per year,70% of which come for the day only. The majority of visitors come in summer, with nearly 20% of all visitors coming in January. The Island has accommodation for up to 2850 visitors, while day only visitors can be as high as 5000 people.
The Island has been a favourite holiday destination for over 50 years, and is iconic for Perth residents who use it as a place to celebrate a whole list of events such as schoolies. Because there is not allot of accommodation on the Island and it is so popular, a ballot is used during the West Australian school holidays. The Rottnest Lodge and the Quokka Arms are hotels on the island which are very pleasant to stay on and are much more luxurious than the usual YHA hostel style accommodation.
